Sayat-Nova (1722 Tbilisi – 1795 Tbilisi) is the name given to Armenian poet and minstrel Harutyun (Arutin) Sayatian. He was skilled in writing poetry, singing and playing the Saz, Chongour, and kamancheh. He performed in the court of king Heraclius II of Georgia from 1742 to 1759, after which he lost his position at court when he fell in love with the king's daughter, and spent the rest of his life as a priest and monk serving in Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries. In 1795 he was killed in St. George church in Tbilisi during the invasion of the army of Agha Mohammed Khan of Ghajarid dynasty. Sayat-Nova is considered by many the greatest minstrel (ashough, folk singer-songwriter) that ever lived in the Caucasus. About 230 songs can be attributed to Sayat-Nova, although he may have written much more altogether. About half of his extant songs are in Azeri, and the rest in Armenian and Georgian, a number of them being sung to this day. He was also fluent in Persian and Arabic. In Armenia Sayat Nova is also considered a poet with a considerable contribution to the Armenian poetry of his century. Despite the fact that he lived his entire life in a deeply religious society, his poems are mostly secular and full of Romantic expressionism.
